Early Serious Mental Illness and Co-Occurring Substance Use Disorders

SAMHSA & ESMI TTA Center Presents: The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) National Training and Technical Assistance Center for Early Serious Mental Illness (ESMI TTA Center) is hosting a webinar series that addresses a range of topics related to early serious mental illness (ESMI), including clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P) and first episode psychosis (FEP). State mental health authorities, practitioners, providers, peers, community referral partners, evaluators, family members, individuals experiencing ESMI, and other stakeholders are invited to attend.

The fifth session of the series is a one-hour webinar that will provide an overview of substance use and substance use disorders among individuals experiencing ESMI.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
• Describe trends related to the prevalence of substance use and substance use disorders among individuals experiencing ESMI
• Differentiate substance use from substance use disorders
• Identify considerations for accurately assessing co-occurring substance use and substance use disorders among individuals experiencing ESMI
• Identify integrated treatment approaches and interventions to address substance use and substance use disorders tailored for individuals experiencing ESMI
