PCCP: Empowering Approaches for Working with People

June 19 @ 9:30 am - 11:30 am

UMD Presents: A case for replacing compliance with Engagement. As behavioral health services and supports have evolved, one of our most powerful lessons learned is that pressuring “compliance” or “treatment adherence” does not work. We cannot force people into health and wellness. Taking pills and/or attending appointments is not sufficient for achieving wellness. Words like compliance, adherence, and attendance persist in interactions and in documentation. At the same time, problems with disengagement and dropout persist. Research on person-centered care supports shifts to language and approaches that are more empowering and engaging. In this training we will identify common pitfalls and strategies for being more engaging and empowering including effective listening, collaborative decision making, and matching approaches to stages of change.
