Experiencing a loss by suicide is one of the most difficult things that a person will ever experience. This training provides a brief overview of the rationale and recommendations for conducting postvention response after a death by suicide. Attendees will learn the essential components of a postvention response and the various responsibilities of postvention team members. Grief is a highly individualized experience. It can be quite destabilizing and have lasting effects. We will discuss types of grief and the stages of grief that one may experience and touch on how suicide loss may impact the bereaved. We will also review local, state and national resources to assist in a postvention response, as well as, supporting survivors. In conclusion, the importance of self-care for the responders and the survivor will be emphasized.
