HeadsUp Grand Rounds Series: Proactively Identifying and Navigating College and University Accommodations

October 17 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

HeadsUp Presents: Supported Employment and Education Specialists (SEES) within Coordinated Specialty Care (CSC) teams assist young adults in exploring careers and educational programs related to their interests, strengths, talents, academic aptitude, and goals. This session will focus on strategies SEESs may use to ensure young adults have the tools they need to achieve their educational and employment goals. This includes reviewing with young adults their academic challenges and discussing their preferences for support, such as whether they want to request accommodations, where they prefer to meet, which family members to include in the education plan, and what supports the SEES should provide. This session will review helping young adults make informed decisions regarding what they wish to disclose about their mental health condition, disability, or any other personal information to professors, other students, and college disability support center staff to obtain needed accommodations. This session will address ways to provide students with ongoing support once they start school, such as teaching students skills to organize and manage their course load and schedule, and accepting that youth and young adults may experience ambivalence towards their goals as a normal part of their development and need assistance revising their plans.

Objectives:
Explore with young adults their career interests and academic aptitudes as they develop their education goals, and help them select school and training programs related to their preferences and strengths.

Assist young adults with making informed choices regarding disclosing their mental health condition to obtain college accommodations.

Navigate colleges’ Disability Support Services (DSS) to apply for and acquire accommodations for young adults.
